Homework Policy

What is Homework?

Homework includes out-of-class tasks assigned to students as a follow-up or extension of classroom work.

There are different types of homework assignments.

  • Practice assignments help to reinforce newly acquired or developing skills.
  • Extension assignments allow students to apply what they have learned in new ways; these assignments may include long-term projects.

Homework may also involve studying for tests or preparing for upcoming classroom activities. Each of these assignments is designed to help your child get the most out of his or her education. Teachers make sure that homework assignments are explained clearly, and that students have had necessary classroom instruction to do the work successfully.

Students are expected to take home books and other needed supplies. Students are also expected to complete homework assignments and turn them in on time. If a student is absent from school, he or she will be expected to complete make-up homework assignments. The number of days provided to complete the assignments will be the same as the number of days of absence.

Suggested Time for Homework

John C. Fremont Elementary School has established suggested time limits for homework according to District policy.

Children who cannot read independently should be read to for 20 minutes and/or be given an opportunity to look at beginning reading books. In addition to the following homework guidelines, students are expected to do a minimum of 20 minutes of reading outside of school per day.The following time limits are suggested as average number of minutes per day. There may be variations from time to time:

Kindergarten: Up to 10 minutes daily

Grades 1-3: 10 to 40 minutes daily

Grades 4-6: 30 to 60 minutes daily

How Can Parents Get Involved?

Parents are encouraged to support your child's homework efforts in the following ways:

  • Check the daily assignment sheet.
  • Provide a suitable study area and the necessary materials to complete assignments.
  • Establish a specific homework time and monitor after school activities to allow sufficient time for homework.
  • Praise your child's efforts. If questions arise about the assignments, and your child asks for help, ask him/her questions, or work through an example, rather than providing the answers.
  • Check completed assignments and encourage your child to correct mistakes.
  • Share any concerns you may have regarding the amount or type of homework with your child's teacher.

Tardy Policy

Punctuality is a habit that we strive to develop in our students. Frequent tardies rob your child of instructional time. Students arriving late to school often feel anxious and as if they are trying to catch up all day long. We need your help in developing responsible students. School and home must work together to instill punctual habits. In order to do this we will be enforcing the following Tardy Policy.

Students with perfect attendance and who arrive at school on time will be recognized with Gold Slips. A parent conference will be held for students grades K-3 who receive 10 or more tardies. A plan to develop punctual habits will be developed. Students in grades 4-6 who receive 10 or more tardies will be assigned to Saturday School. Promptness is extremely important and valued at Fremont Elementary School. Your cooperation and help in this matter are greatly appreciated.

Students who are tardy to school, thereby missing instructional time, may be required to make up work during recess periods.

Absence Policy

Student attendance is to be regular and punctual. It is the responsibility of all students to make up class work missed during an absence.

Please call the school office when your child is absent or send a note with your child when they return, giving the date and reaon for each absence from school. If your child has been sick with a communicable disease or surgey, or is wearing a cast or a splint, he/she must report to the health office upon return with a note from the doctor stating restrictions.

Cafeteria Policy

Children may bring lunch from home, or purchase one in the cafeteria for $2.00 including a drink. Milk and water may be purchased separately for $.50. For your convenience, you may prepay lunches by the use of Meal Cards. Pre-payments may be made in the cafeteria before school or anytime in the office. Checks should be made payable to “GUSD”. Increments of $40.00 (twenty lunches) are recommended. Food Services will notify you when the balance is low.

The menu is published at the end of each month and is posted in each classroom and sent home in Thursday Folders. On minimum days, students who purchase lunch will be served a sack lunch “to go”. Please do not bring children lunches from local fast food restaurants in lieu of cafeteria food or a bag lunch.

Visiting the Campus

All parents and visitors must sign-in at the office and wear a badge when entering campus. Anyone who enters the campus without a badge will be sent back to the office to obtain one. Parents may NOT drop off lunches, books, homework, projects, etc. after the 8:15 bell rings.

Student Dress Code

Students are expected to dress within the following standard of Dress Code: No clothing with advertisements: drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, tobacco, bad language, etc. No unfitted clothing: belts, pants, shirts, tops No gang related attire No short shorts, low necklines or backlines, shoulder less garments or revealing clothing No make-up, jewelry or extreme hairstyles that are disruptive to the learning environment or might pose a safety hazard No unsafe shoes (open toed, high heels, etc.) The child may be sent home to change or disciplined for continual defiance.

Bicycle Policy

Students in grades 4 through 6 may ride their bicycle to/from school. Students are required to park and lock them at the bicycle racks. STUDENTS MUST WEAR HELMETS WHILE RIDING BICYCLES TO AND FROM SCHOOL. Students failing to do so will lose riding bicycle privilege to/from school. Security of the bicycle is the responsibility of the student.

Student Information Cards

Student Information Cards for every student are kept on file in the school office to be used to locate parents in case of an emergency.

A new card must be completed each fall so that the information is current.

In addition, for your child's safety, please notify the school of any change of address, home and work telephone numbers that occur during the year. Accurate information on the card is needed so that a teacher, principal, nurse or other school employee can notify without delay a parent or other designated responsible adult in case a child becomes ill or is injured at school.

If a major fire, earthquake or other disaster should occur during school hours, children will be kept at school in a safe area until an authorized adult comes to pick them up.

Lost & Found

Lost and found items can be found next the cafeteria. Small items will be kept in the office to be reclaimed.
