Additional Programs During & After School

Below are a variety of enrichment programs Fremont offers to our students during the school day. (Scroll down to see afterschool programs)

Art Docent Program

The Meet the Masters art program is sponsored by our PTA. Parent docents are trained to deliver Meet the Masters lessons to classrooms. Lessons cover art history and hands-on projects based on the work of 12 selected "master" artists. Everyone enjoys this fun and rewarding program.

Chorus

Mrs. Sally Dworsky teaches chorus on Fridays to grades 1-6. There are two choral performances at Fremont every year. One is the Winter Concert, held in December during the school day and the second is the Spring Sing held on a Friday evening in June. Parents and families are welcome to both performances.

Computer Lab

Mrs. Laura Laing, our Computer Lab teacher, instructs every class once per week in our Computer Lab. There are 40 MACs in the lab.

Gifted & Talented Education (GATE)

Mrs. Christin Walley, our Teacher Specialist heads up our GATE program. John C. Fremont offers varied opportunities for gifted students, both in and out of the classroom. Primarily, these students receive differentiated instruction in their classroom. As teachers increase the depth and complexity of classroom discussions, activities and assignments on a daily basis, students become more apt to develop a love for learning. Teachers in grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been trained in creative problem solving techniques as well as extension activities that will challenge students. There is ongoing school and district support to assist teachers in creating a classroom climate that encourages questions, responsibility and independence. Materials, media and resources are utilized to stimulate in-depth learning opportunities. Teachers are exposed to appropriate teaching and learning strategies for the gifted.

Gifted and Talented Education Programs are overseen by the California State Boards of Education. Assembly Bill 2313 requires that GATE programs be an integral part of the school day and include differentiated, modified instruction. GATE program standards, written in a joint effort between the California Department of Education and the California Association for the Gifted, serve as a guide for schools as they provide differentiated curriculum, for gifted students. The standards include eight components: program design, identification, curriculum and instruction, social and emotional development, professional development, parent and community involvement, program assessments and budgets. More information can be found on the Department of Education website www.cde.ca.gov/sp/gt/

Various organizations offer suggestions for parents regarding the education of their gifted child.

  • National Association for Gifted Children: www.nagc.org
  • California Associated for the Gifted: www.cagifted.org
  • After School Enrichment: GATE students are invited to participate in various enrichment classes in a one hour class on Wednesdays for grades 4-6.

These classes cover a variety of topics during the year. Special interest classes and workshops provide an excellent opportunity for gifted children to pursue a subject in depth.

Library

Every class visits the library weekly where Mrs. Roxanne Gay reads a grade-appropriate story and assists students in checking out books. Many books have been added recently, funded by a generous grant from the Sexton Foundation. Books are chosen for our collection by teacher and critical recommendations supporting our curriculum and promoting an interest in fine childrens' literature. Additionally, PAC sponsors the Adopt-A-Book Program, in which Fremont families may choose a new library book to purchase. The book is then donated to the library with the name of the donor written inside the book. This is a wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion. Ask Mrs. Gay for further information.

Literacy Lab

Fremont's Literacy Lab offers a variety of supplementary-leveled reading materials for our staff to utilize with classroom reading groups. Mrs. Cyanne Wing, our Literacy Lab coordinator, also provides additional reading skills instruction for some of the students. The students are seen in twice-weekly, small group sessions.

Orchestra

Mrs. Deneil Jurado, teaches orchestra to grades 4-6 on Mondays.

Physical Education (P.E.)

Mr. Mark Gang, our Physical Education Teacher, instructs grades 4-6 every Tuesday and Thursday. The curriculum consists of healthy lifestles including cardiovascular exercise, stretching, and team sports.
